The metal cabinet feels solid and the DVD tray isn't flimsy. I first did a test setup by connecting the CATV coax cable to the antenna in and then connecting the DR570 directly to a Sony Bravia LCD via HDMI. Initial setup was straightforward and I let the unit do an autoscan for channels. My actual setup just uses S-video and audio connections from my digital cable box (I don't use the built-in tuner). These settings determine the bit rate (variable bit rate) of the MPEG-2 video stream and what I found is the LP mode (4 hours of recording) offering pretty good overall quality. The only exception is anything with fast action where you will notice a substantial degradation in the clarity during those particular recorded scenes. Both the XP (1 hour) and SP (2 hour) mode will take care of this issue at the expense of being able to record less content on a disc. Both EP (6 hour) and SLP (8 hour) mode offer pretty poor picture quality and are at least for me, unusable. As others have mentioned, loading a disc can take around a half a minute when either inserting a new disc or powering on the recorder. Rewritable DVD discs need to be formatted first (takes less than half a minute). Recording is quite simple and no different than a VCR.http://salonlomi.pl/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1629a3dc8a7121---corega-bar-wl-manual.pdf One caveat with many of these DVD recorders is that when you stop recording, you may lose the last few seconds (so I usually just let the recording go for 2-3 extra seconds before pausing or hitting stop). Another note is that unlike video tape where when you hit stop, you can quickly record again, this DVD recorder writes to the disc for around half a minute before you can do any other action. Playback is like any standard VHS or DVD player. Note that you don't gain any extra recording time doing this (the only way to do that is deleting that entire title or completely reformatting the disc). The advanced portion of the manual covers this. Like all DVD recorders, there is a finalization step which allows the DVD disc to be playable on most any other player (like if you are planning to share it with someone else). The DR570 provides an auto finalization setting so that you don't need to remember to do this once your disc is full. Programmed recordings is also relatively straightforward and simple. So far, I haven't encountered any missed recordings. Like many others, the main complaint is the remote and its dark lettering. I've since memorized the location of the key buttons which I use but compared to the remotes for my Toshiba television (which has a simple but very nice glow in the dark buttons which are big) and VCR's, this thing is pretty bad from a usability perspective (this minus one star). Overall, I've been very pleased with this recorder and most of Toshiba's recent consumer electronics devices. Whereas some other brands look and feel like disposable pieces of junk at this price range, the DR570 doesn't give that impression and I would definitely recommend this unit to others looking to make the jump from VHS to DVD. In a nutshell, the particular unit I received has been extremely reliable and I've had no problems (no lockups, no odd clock problems that some are experiencing, no missed programmed recordings, etc).http://realwebguys.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1629a3dcb8a561---Corega-cg-wlbargo-manual.pdf I now use a universal remote (Logitech Harmony) in place of the one that comes with the recorder. The Panasonic was working at that time but finally died a few months ago, so I took the Toshiba out of the box and hooked it up. It powered up, and I started setting it up, but then everything stopped. I've tried contacting Toshiba in this regard, with no success. I haven't even been able to talk to a real live human being about it; the website refers you to technical support, but technical support says the unit is no longer covered. Duh! I just want to know if there's a way to fix it or if I should throw it in the trash. As a senior citizen on a fixed budget, I cannot afford to buy something so expensive and have to toss it out, without even getting a chance to use it. I thought Toshiba built better products than this! (P.S. I have since bought a refurbished Sony DVD recorder. Please try again later. From the United StatesI purchased this machine to replace a VCR that would no longer record well. The timer recording settings are a snap. Set-up is easy and intuitive (well, as intuitive as modern AV equipment can be). Documentation is decent, a 125 page manual is included. Thus far, I have watched pre-recorded DVD movies (stunning picture), TV through the amazingly capable tuner (it pulls in more channels than the Samsung HDTV tuner does), TV recorded at second worst and second best quality (excellent on both counts). Yes, the discs take a while to load, but this machine is trying to figure out a lot of stuff each time a disc is loaded. The remote IS pretty cheesy feeling, with TINY wobbly buttons. I am anxious for Logitech to have this unit available for auto-configuration with the Harmony universal remote. In the meantime, I can figure out which remote buttons I really want to keep, once I get the harmony codes to download (I know I can program it myself, but such a pain). Highly recommended. Please try again later. Please try again later. Melvin F. Martin 2.www.kappapma.com/userfiles/files/buick-rainier-2004-repair-manual.pdf0 out of 5 stars So only the Tuner has failed. Funny, had the unit for a few years so the problem is not one of age or over use. March 2014: turned on today to watch over the air station and NO TUNER. Have tried everything including checking my rabbit ears by pluging directly into my TV, nothing. The tuner last worked 3 days ago so don't know what happen. Very unhappy to see this, it had been a good unit and I SELDOM used the unit untill very recently when I started to burn more DVDs. I last burned a DVD 2 days ago so I assumed it is still working(although I do need to try to verify). I really can no longer recommend this unit. Oct 2013: Just another update, all working perfectly. Been recording for later viewing many over the air(broadcast) shows not carried on my FiOS with no issues. Clock(see begining of review below) has maintained perfect time. Very happy with the finished recording just using RABBIT EARS.No problems with unit at all to date. Have recorded many shows with no problems. Quality of recording is quite acceptable although not as clear as the FIOS signal I recorded from. Would now recomment this product provided user understands the automatic clock update feature may best be turned off(also turn off the daylight savings time feature). Had this product about 1 year, tried recording only one time but had really planned to use the digital tuner in case of sat.Had to unplug for 10-15 minutes then plug in. The unit worked for a period of time. After the last time it did this I called Toshiba service was told to leave the auto clock setting on. This suppose to check local PBS stations at 12AM and 12PM and set time. When this problem starts the unit got very warm on the top right side. After doing what Toshiba advised(and the problem came up again) I re-read the manual. The manual says the time only will be changed with a ANALOG PBS station. We are now digital in the US. I have turned off the auto clock check and the daylight savings check. Waiting to see if problem is now resolved(so far been approx. 1 week since I made this change). As for other items, unit is slow to load, the remote is terrible(can't see the labels), I notice no improvement on the UPCONVERTING to 1080p of dvds. But, using just my OLD antenna on my roof the digital tuning is outstanding. I am located in Southern California so we can get many stations over the air and the tuner really pulls them in. So, as long as I can use the unit it does serve my purpose. The recording on DVD-RW works OK and it does record shows. If the clock issue does not come up I will be content and probably would improve the ratings to 3 or even 4 stars on some performance issues. However I would not recommend since the price is not cheap and I do not believe it is a throw away product(althought Toshiba may think this way). Please try again later. Please try again later. Bill Gaston 4.0 out of 5 stars After setting some channels to record, which they did, everything seemed perfect -- however the next day, the clock seemed to have a mind of its own and was not correct. I turned the DR570 off for thirty or more minutes but the clock never set. The fourth day, the clock has held the correct time and I assume the clock and time checking is functioning normally. So, there appears to be a major malfunction in either the clock chipset or software with my unit since it fails to keep proper time when manually setting the clock and not using a TV channel. There is an apparent malfunction when it comes to the unit identifying DTV channels since this unit identified many channels that were not in service and it takes an extremely long time for the DTV channels to scan. The Owner's Manual is overbearing and not well constructed. Whomever the second party was who wrote the manual, based on the device's functions, leaves a lot to be desired in my humble opinion -- too much left to assumption. In the first place they do describe the remote buttons and their supposed functions but when you get to the menus it is left up to the user to track down what that menu item does. Everything else could be eliminated and the above mentioned three could display larger so you can see them from a distance. On a scale of zero to ten, I'd give the DR570's cabinet about a number two. I would think a budget-priced machine should be unsophisticated with few useless items for an everyday person and leave all those features to units costing more and for people who supposedly need them. I'd rate the remote about a number two. The engineers have crammed to many functions into buttons on the remote instead of using menus as it was in the past. The thing rocks like a rocking chair and isn't very stable when pressing a button on either the far right or left side. My old old tape units have had this feature for the past fifteen years or so and they do a very good job. It used to be that a few commercials were tolerable but as time goes along we're seeing 5-12 commercials or more during each break. I'd much rather a unit sense commercial coding where you could then press a button and the machine fast-forward to the next commercial marker and start playing my show again. CON: Some might not consider it a necessary feature but most of the recorders I've had a channel could be selected before starting a recording session and the sound is still present while setting the session. The DR570 is completely mute. Somewhere in our dark future, perhaps Toshiba might read some of our comments...Please try again later. Please try again later. Bigstory 2.0 out of 5 stars The one positive about this unit is the digital tuner. In my area, the channels come thru clearly and consistently. Otherwise, I don't enjoy using this unit at all. Compared to my Maganovox DVD recorder(which unfortunately does not have the digital tuner), this unit is clunky and requires me to go through more tedious tasks in order to complete a tasks. Also, my Magnovox is able to finalize a disc at a quicker rate. Once finalized, the discs contains a nice picture menu when played in other DVD units whereas with this Toshiba, I only get a few text. The remote is also a bit cumbersome to use and all the functions are not intuitively placed. One last thing is sometimes the unit would freeze up on me and I would need to unplug it for a minute. Then I would need to re-set the clock again, kinda annoying. So, nice digital tuner but annoying and cumbersome with everything else. Please try again later. Please try again later. WebShopperLady 4.0 out of 5 stars You can also set it up to record one channel, while watching another. However, you will not have all channels on the recorder if you choose to go this route - only up to two-digit channels, not three. Some think you have to record only what's being watched, but that's only if you want ALL channels from your cable or satelite. I really like being able to delete titles without formatting the whole DVD. The only cons are it can be a little slow when it's processing, loading a disc, or doing one of it's functions. But that's just the way it works with DVD's, you have to be patient sometimes. The other major con is the remote control. I have to say it is a joke. You need x-ray vision to use it, I finally just marked the button I use most with permanent markers. But hey, you can't have everything. And of course the remote is specifically for the recorder, you won't find volume control or any T.V. functions on it-none of them do. And of course you loose your recording memory times if you want to conserve by turning off your power strip or unplugging, so that's a slight drawback also.) But, again, overall - Great Product for recording to DVD while watching another program. Please try again later. Please try again later. Herbert J. Fellows 3.0 out of 5 stars I have a 5 year old Panasonic that works better and has more features. The biggest single gripe I have about this is the buttons on the remote. If this sounds petty, read on. The writing that tells you what each button is for is so bad that I have to hold the remote right under a light to see it. Even then it's iffy. It's like they put grey lettering on a black background. I don't have the worlds greatest eyesight, but I have 4 other remotes where this is not an issue. As I don't use this recorder on a regular basis, I tend to forget which buttons do what. Maybe if you used it every day, this wouldn't matter. However, in my case, it's something that immediately irritates me every time I use it, because it would have been so simple to fix. You have to wonder if they have human beings trying these things out before they bring them to market. Poor QC, imho. After 5 months, I tried to make my first timer recording. I have Directv. Couldn't figure it out, folloWing directions didn't work, wasn't getting the screens they said I should get in the manual. I don't think so. I was told that I need to input the channel before each program, that I could not do multiple programs on different channels. I thought the whole point of timer recording was to record things while you were away. Apparently not, according to Toshiba cs. Only option given was to call back cs again, 'but you'll get the same answer'! DISGUSTED!Please try again later. Please try again later. Jeffrey mr. video reviews 5.0 out of 5 stars Please try again later. Please try again later. Plaw 4.0 out of 5 stars Before purchase, I read about the time resetting itself erratically and unpredictably which concerned me. And, indeed, with the first of these I purchases, the time reset itself overnight on the first day. Instead, to to manual clock set. Since having done that, no more problems. Don't like the remote visibility either (like everyone else), but after using it for a while you can activate the right buttoms just be feel, I found so that was not a fatal problem. It also takes its time in loading disks but again, not a fatal problem. I would have preferred a unit capable of using DVD-RAM disks but you can't have everything. Units are all used for time shifting of programs. As long as you set them up to finalize after timer programming is complete, the disks play on other Toshiba players as well as on a Panasonic DVD-RAM capable player and an older Pioneer Elite player I have. Good, solid unit. Please try again later. Please try again later. Nicole 3.0 out of 5 stars The Toshiba DR570 meets my basic recording needs, but that's all. The Sony definitely spoiled me with additional features that I enjoyed such as showing the title and date of the programs recorded. The Toshiba shows the first frame of the record, which isn't helpful given that it's always the commercial that aired before the program started. Once you highlight the program, it does start to play in the preview pane and show the time and date it was recorded but it'd be nice to know immediately like I did with the Sony. The remote is definitely the worst one I've experienced. It's hard to read in low light and doesn't have many of the buttons I expected. Another annoyance with this machine is the inability to create a new record or modify an existing one while watching what you've recorded. The Sony allowed me to do that as did all the VCRs I previously used. Furthermore, you lose program audio when you're setting up a record. The Toshiba doesn't always like to fully erase the program. Luckily, it does tell you that deleting the title will not create additional free space. I've discovered a workaround for this. Don't delete the title, play a few seconds of it, then go back in to delete.
